    2. Twelve year old Ally, and her irritating little brother Eric are surprised on their way home from the movies one night when Ally comes across a bank robbery in progress Terrified by the dreams of the Gauze Men , especially the robber with his scary light blue eyes who knocked Ally over, she starts isolating herself from the group of girls in her class and joins her brother and the other boys in the neighborhood who start digging holes in the backyard Except, they aren t just building a hole It s [...]

    3. This is a really fun read, a coming of age novel for probably eight to twelve or thirteen year olds about digging tunnels under the neighborhood I always wanted to do that growing up, but our water table was too high Natalie does a great job building suspense, but the bittersweet looks into the characters lives were what I enjoyed most It helped me to remember what it was like as a late grade schooler when everything in life is changing so fast My wife and ten year old daughter and I read it, an [...]

When I was a little girl like 7 or 8 years old my older brother decided to dig a hole in a back corner of the backyard And he dug A lot For a long time The hole ended up being somewhere around 4 x6 in size and maybe 4 feet deep A kid could sit in there with some head room to spare It also became a Boyz Only fort for my brother and his dippy friends so I was only allowed in there a handful of times sometimes willingly, but often than not on a dare or something because my brother knew I was, amon [...]

    10. This is a wonderful book for boys and girls and adults, too It wasn t what I expected The title lead me to believe it might be a fantasy, but it s not at all It s a realistic story with universal appeal The tunnel digging is something most kids are intrigued with but usually don t have such an opportunity The secrecy behind the tunnels and the end goal pulled me right in, as did the scary gauze men and how they spooked Ally off and on throughout the book There are many interesting layers to this [...]

Arc I personally did not read this book myself, but I did loan it to my 11 year old cousin who loves reading, hoping to get a fair review for this book And she loved it for the most part I explained to her what this book was for and she thought it was so nice But anyways she told me she really liked it She thought it was really thrilling and wondered if there would ever be a sequel She thought Ally was awesome and I can tell she left an impact on her Thanks

    14. I love finding books that have good role models for young girls The main character is not afraid to defy stereotypes She goes digging with the boys but still likes makeup sometimes And as others mentioned, the premise of the book was so imaginative The kids, who are way smarter than any 11 year olds I know, manage to make a secret network of tunnels that lead to a forbidden part of the town How awesome is that
